Have Passport, Will Interpret

Are you a natural and experienced globe trotter, a person who has only dreamed of traveling to fantastic places around the world, or someone somewhere in between? This workshop will share adventures and insights from a traveling interpreter’s perspective, and many lessons learned. Your expectations, physical and mental stamina may be challenged by surprise when you embark into the world of interpreting in other lands and cultures. Learn how to establish right expectations, live and work in a foreign environment, pack smart, prepare well, interact and succeed as a traveling interpreter.

I Quit!

I QUIT!” –  Whether you call it anger, frustration, exhaustion or burnout, we all experience emotional and physical strains which may tempt us to give up and cry out, “I QUIT!”  While the foundation of most ethical decision making starts with “Do no harm”, interpreters may find they apply that protection only to others and forget that they too may suffer long term affects if not adhering to safe and ethical practices.  Participants will explore paradigms of interpreting situations, interpreting behaviors and ethics, approaches to decision making, danger zones to recognize and avoid.

Interpreting Pro Bono

The CPC sets this standard in writing: interpreters will occasionally provide their professional services pro bono. This discussion will dive into the various factors interpreters may consider when deciding how and when to discount their fees and provide interpreting free of charge.

Virtual Teaming

Virtual interpreting took off in 2020. Many interpreters found themselves thrown into a completely new working environment rife with new demands and challenges. This discussion will focus on one particular aspect of virtual interpreters: teaming.
